NLP Anchoring

Use NLP Anchoring to change how you feel

An emotion that you once had because of a certain experience will be triggered when you come into contact with an anchor.

It can be something you see, hear, feel, taste or smell.

Many Anchors are neutral, they really don’t cause you to go into any emotional state or evoke pleasant or bad memories.

For example, you see someone wearing a hat and you remember you used to own one just like it. This really doesn't cause you any emotion.

On the other hand, you are walking through town and suddenly you are aware of a particular scent, it is the same cologne as your first love used to wear. You would get a very different type of Anchor now.

Positive or negative anchors can be triggered in many different ways, a favourite song, a look that someone gives you, a tone of voice, a particular word, in fact almost anything that you can remember or perceive can act as an anchor.

When you have an experience – this can lead to you feeling an emotion – an internal response is created to the experience- this forms an anchor

Strong anchors do cause you to go into a state. Anchors are built through repetition and they become stronger over time.

Take the time now to think about what triggers your anchors? What triggers an emotional change in you? And what triggers your state to change? You can read the two examples below to give you an idea of what anchors are all about.

Mince Pies

When I see mince pies for sale in the shops it always reminds me of my mom and the mice pies that she used to make. Then I remember Christmas, in a warm loving environment, I remember the excitement and anticipation of Christmas morning.

United

The song ‘United’ by Judas Priest was in the charts when, aged 9, I scored the only goal in the final of our school five-a-side football tournament.

When I listen to the song I can remember the clapping, cheering, kids going wild (we were the underdogs) I can remember feeling so proud, feeling successful, feeling ten feet tall, and the incredible feeling associated with winning when you have worked your socks off and have given more that 100% effort.

I can also remember that it was a really warm day, and it was one of the last days at school before the start of the six weeks holiday.

There are probably plenty of other events and experiences that could trigger negative states and emotions, being human this does happen, but it is great to have an understanding of anchors and snap out of it, better still to use a positive anchor and snap straight into a resourceful state.

The great thing about anchors is that you don’t have to leave it to chance to see what the day throws at you, use anchors to help you feel good consistently, you can set yourself anchors to fire off so that they support you in the most positive ways.

If you want to change your emotional state you can use a Resource Anchor

First decide what state you want to be in.

How do you want to feel?

Maybe you are about to give a presentation or go into a meeting and you are feeling nervous; a better state for you to be in would be a confident state.

Think of a time or an event where you were successful and confident. Make sure you are fully associated in the experience (Through your own eyes) Enhance the image, look for key Submodalities and enjoy the image.

Select a place on your body to anchor, such as holding your hand across your heart, clench your fist, touch a knuckle on your hand and press, and make this as unique as possible. When the image reaches its peak anchor it.

When you have reached the peak and anchored the emotion you want to feel stop, break your state, then do the anchor again, place the anchor then stop, break state.

This is a kinaesthetic anchor because you touch yourself in a particular way as you anchor.

To fire a visual anchor you would view it.

To fire an auditory anchor you would listen to it.

A great way to anchor is to do all three.

See the experience, hear what you did at the time, touch yourself, and break state.

You can also stack states. If you want to go into your meeting feeling different states and emotions such as Successful, confident, happy and relaxed then fire off different anchors from your many experiences and memories.

In your note pad or in your Dynamic NLP Daily Journal make a list of your powerful anchors in the NLP Anchoring section.

You can look into the future and visualise events where you want to experience particular emotions and feelings that will put you into empowering states.

You can do this exercise in an associated and disassociated way. You can imagine yourself in any situations achieving success or your desired outcome.

You could be in that important meeting full of confidence, reaching perfection with your communication towards all the people in the room, you can answer questions perfectly, overcome objections and ultimately achieve what you wanted when you entered the room.

Viewing future events in a positive way will send incredibly strong positive signals to your brain.

Some people find it easy to live in a negative world, they are at the will of the negative anchors and they are constantly sending destructive signal to their brain, yet it is as easy and much more pleasurable and rewarding to go the positive route.

Note down ten states that you would like to be in, write what emotions you want to experience and what you will see, hear and feel. Design and build ten different scenarios, add in your key submodalities, enhance the image as much as you can, put your favourite music into it, have people say things to you in the tone of voice that you like.

When you have designed the ten scenarios practice NLP Anchoring the feelings and emotions and see how much you enjoy the state you are in. This will be an incredibly powerful experience for you, especially if you can practice each day firing off the positive anchors. Very soon you will become very good at spotting anchors that effect yourself and other people. Site Build It!
