If there is something in your life that you don't like, you can use the skills and tools found within NLP to help you make the required changes.

More than ever, research is attesting the fundamental role played by stress in causing and aggravating a lot of physical and emotional disorders.

In the June 6, 1983 issue of Time Magazine, the cover story called stress "The Epidemic of the Eighties." The journalist also claimed that stress is an extremely serious health problem.

And there is no doubt whatsoever that our world has become even more complicated and stressful over the last twenty-five years since that article was written. A lot of surveys show that almost everybody feels that they are subject to a great deal of stress.

Researchers in the field estimate that around 75 to 90 percent of all visits to PCPs (Primary Care Physicians) are related to stress.

Most people claim their stress is mainly due to their job.

Most people claim their stress is mainly due to their job. The levels of stress have also grown in children and the elderly population for reasons including: Peer pressures that often lead to everything from cigarette smoking to drug and alcohol abuse; the wearing away of religion and family values; growing crime rates; fear for personal safety; and last but not least social isolation and loneliness.

Stress is a factor of conditions such as diabetes, ulcers, low back and neck pain, high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks.

This is because of the ever growing sympathetic nervous system activity along with the release of cortisol, adrenaline, and other hormones.

Chronic stress is corollary of weakened immune system resistance. Stress can be responsible for anxiety, depression, and its different effects on the body's organs. The following definition for "stress" can be found in the American Heritage Dictionary:

"To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain"

"Tension" is defined as follows: "Mental, emotional, or nervous strain"

The word "anxiety" is defined as follows: "A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties"

And it defines "depression" as follows: "The condition of feeling sad or despondent"

Depression, Death, Sadness etc...

The following is the definition of "clinical depression": "A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death." We can nonetheless be sure that our mind is the main reason for our experience of stress, anxiety and depression.

In other words, what we think about, and our attitudes and points of view about our experiences create what we feel.

So if we can manage to alter our thoughts, attitudes, and points of view, then we can eliminate our feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression and attain a better state of being.

Since the beginning of time, people have tried to find methods that would allow them to get rid of stress.

The pharmaceutical industry seems to have a pill for everything. And to that end the industry has designed a wide line of sedatives from Valium to Xanax.

If you choose to use these pills for relief, please be sure to pay attention to the fine print and learn about the side effects, which commonly are, among others, addiction and dependency.

Indeed these kinds of drugs attempt to cure the symptoms, instead of the cause. So when one stops ingesting them, the symptoms can come back.

There is Good News!

A better method to get rid of tension, stress, anxiety, and depression is to try to cure its actual cause, which as I said above, is generally our thought processes.

There is good news. Hypnosis is all about relaxation. The AMA recognized hypnosis in 1958 as an effective way to cure stress and stress related symptoms. But unlike pills, there are definitely no negative side effects.

Hypnosis is the Alpha level of consciousness.

It is the daydream like temporary psychological frame of mind which we go through as we are about to fall asleep in the evening.

And we go through it once more when we wake up in the morning. There are several different ways to guide ourselves into this relaxed mood, from step-by-step relaxation to visual imagery to listening to hypnosis CD's.

Once in the hypnotic state, we can communicate with our unconscious mind, which is the center of our feelings.

And one can more easily admit new points of view and ideas which can help us to reduce anxiety, or even avoid it completely.

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), which is a modern type of hypnosis, has many wonderful techniques for dissipating stress. Perhaps the technique that works best is called the "swish" pattern - or the "flash" pattern.
