The Power Swish
Changing Behaviours
The Power Swish Pattern
He sat watching the T.V. As usual there wasn’t much on that he particularly wanted to watch, he was just flicking through the channels. After yet another cup of coffee he smoked yet another cigarette.
The very next day
He tried to sit up in the bed; this was difficult to do because of the amount of tubes and electrodes that the nurses and doctors had attached to him. Visiting time was over, his wife and 8 year old son turned back and waved bye to him as they left the hospital ward. This would be the last time he saw them.
A bit dramatic you may think, but its not. This is real life and these situations occur every day to someone.
What you must do with your Power Swish Patterns is associate massive immediate pain to not changing and then associate massive immediate pleasure with making a change now.
It’s no good putting things off and thinking ‘I will stop smoking’ or ‘I will stop overeating’ at some time, but not just yet.
The key to success with the power swish is; bring forward the pain and the pleasure. Make it immediate, make it real.
The associated pain to you must be unbearable. If thinking about an unpleasant or painful situation doesn’t upset you then you need to select again. (For example a smoker shouldn’t see themselves developing a smoker’s cough, no, they should see themselves in far worse circumstances such as being told they have cancer, and then they have to go and tell their family)
The associated pleasure must be exciting, highly motivational, and very desirable. You can think of a new situation or you can use a pleasant experience from the past (manipulate and use submodalities to help you)
How to do the Power Swish Pattern
Be exactly clear of the two images you are going to use,
You can make "Power Swish" notes in your
NLP Daily Journal
Play some powerful music to work to. Something quick and punchy, nothing slow and sad!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
In the first image (pain) use submodalities that do nothing for you, add in submodalities and any other thoughts about things you don’t like. Make the image something that you find deeply upsetting.
In the second image (pleasure) use submodalities that really fire up your emotions associated to pleasure and success. Plan this image in detail, remember it can be imagined (future event) or it can be from a pleasurable event in your past!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
So instead of our smoker lying, dying in a hospital bed the second images would be more like this;
He had found it easy to quit smoking. His time was taken up now looking after his body and doing everything he could to achieving the incredible future he had designed and planned. He had completed the ‘man in the minds eye’ exercises, he knew what he really wanted and he was going for it!
He stood at the side of the swimming pool waiting for his son to join him. He looked good, he was slim and toned. His self esteem was through the roof. Since he quit smoking he had never felt so good. His son joined him and they dived in together. Later that evening they walked along the beach and watched the sun set as they made their way to their favorite restaurant.
Get into a powerful stance, get yourself comfortable. First time around run through your Power Swish images slowly, second time build up speed, third time quicker, then go for it!
Old image, new image, smash the old image, break state, do it again.
Smack your hands together as you smash the old picture or say the word whoooosh!
Remember, speed and repetition are the key to success with a swish. Try and do at least twenty swishes before you stop, and then see how you feel about the old unwanted habit or behaviour. Then do some more!
What can you do now?
Complete your man/woman in the minds eye exercise (who are you?)
Develop your ‘what I want’ and ‘what I like’ lists
Work on Four areas of your life you know you must change
