Quit Smoking with NLP

Using NLP to help you to stop smoking cigarettes

If you are going to quit smoking there are Two Golden Rules that will help you to be successful

Regardless of the method you are going to use there are two things you MUST do.

It doesn’t matter which route you take, NLP, Patches, Gum, Prescription Drugs, or Hypnotherapy you must add in these golden rules to your quitting program, and they are:

Change your mind and change what you do

Millions do – So why don’t you?

You will be able to it, millions of other people have done it!.

There are also people that have taken what they thought was the appropriate actions and they tried to quit with the very best intentions but ultimately they failed.

So why would someone who wants to quit smoking fail to quit when others find it easy to quit?

I genuinely believe the reason why people don’t quit successfully is because of the two statements above, they didn’t change in their mind about what smoking cigarettes means to them and they didn’t change what they do with their time and their physical body

Now let us look in detail at the two golden rules. Before we begin it will help if you have a note pad and pen or better still use you NLP Dedicated Daily Journal.

Change Your Mind

All cigarette smokers know that smoking is bad for them. There is plenty of anti –smoking related advertising and publicity out there for every one to know how harmful cigarettes are. There is also a huge amount of support out there to help people to quit smoking and now there is also the smoking ban in place.

You may want to know if I am qualified to help you to quit smoking? The simple answer is YES. I went from smoking 40 cigarettes a day, for over twenty years, to absolutely nil and quit smoking immediately. How? I applied the two golden rules. I changed my mind and I changed what I did. (And No, I didn’t put any weight on, I actually lost two stones in weight)

So why don’t smokers quit when they know they are harming themselves?

Or maybe a better, more productive way to ask this question is

What can a smoker do to help themselves to quit because they know they are harming themselves?

I believe that the very best answer to this question is that smokers think, Imagine or see in their mind that any future health problems, difficulties and even a premature death are way off in the future at some distant point.

When someone starts to smoke cigarettes at maybe 16, 17 or 18 years of age they think they look cool.

It is the done thing. All my friends do it. What they don’t see is the future, even though even at a young age we all know cigarettes are bad for our health.

When your are in your early twenties or early thirties being sixty seems a long way off

What you need to do is bring the future forward. If you are going to get any pain or problems ways off in the future, just as nearly all smokers do then to help you to quit you are going to have to bring these health issues forward in your mind. Start to change your mind: Don’t think about the possibility of having a future problem. Bring it forward, make it today.

What would happen if you were taken seriously ill today?

How would it affect your family?

What would it be like today Today if you suffered a massive heart attack or you were diagnosed with lung cancer?

I very recently worked with someone that wanted to stop smoking and I explained to them that I wanted them to change their mind about cigarettes.

I asked them to over a 7 day period to write down as many statements as they could about what would happen if they continued to smoke.

After just two days the person phoned me and asked me to quickly get them onto the second golden rule (change what you do) because they could no longer continue to smoke cigarettes.

What this person had done was to Associate massive amounts of pain with continuing to smoke, but the key that opens the door to success is the fact that they moved the future forward, they associated huge levels of pain to smoking NOW not at some distant point in the future.

So what can you do?

Get real, you know what health issues smoking cigarettes can cause.

Bring these health issues forward

Visualise events, people, your family, pain, being ill, not seeing your kids again.

Write it all down, keep your note pad with you at all times. This is not a rehearsal – You are only here once

To help you change your mind

To help you change your mind, use the swish pattern to send incredibly powerful signals to your brain.

In the first image see yourself smoking.

See yourself being ill.

This is your mind so it’s up to you how you think – it’s up to you how ugly, disturbing and upsetting you make these images. I suggest you make them bad, very bad.

You can get more swish pattern information here

The Nice Bit

What is your reward? Pleasure! and lots of it!!

You decide what to view in the second part of the swish pattern. Just make sure it is really pleasurable or rewarding.

You could view yourself achieving something you always wanted.

They key when sending the signal to your brain is;

Smoking=Pain=Massive Pain=Now

Quitting=Pleasure=Rewards=Achievement=and More Pleasure

Really smash those old smoking signals that you hold in your mind

Practice and use the swish pattern.

Swish patterns are very effective and they are available to you Free of Charge Anytime You Want to Use them!

The Second Golden Rule

Do Something Different - Change What You Do

If you attempt to quit smoking and don’t change what you do I can assure you that you are doomed to failure.

What I mean by change what you do is change how you use your body and change how you spend your time.

If you attempt to quit smoking and still do the same as you have always done it is not going to work.

You need to change your whole habitual behaviour. If you sit down at the same time, in the same place , to watch the same T.V. show, guess what is going to happen when the adverts come on? That’s right, you are going to be thinking ‘Cigarette’.

You need to have a plan that is going to help you for the first couple of weeks after you stop smoking.

This plan doesn’t have to be regimented but you do need to be prepared and have something different to do.

What could you do differently?

Swimming

Walking

Gardening

Running

Spend more time with the kids

Plan your swish patterns and use them

Exercise at home

Make love more often!

Develop a new hobby – something you have always wanted to do

So the second part of this plan is to change what you do. Make sure you take the time to develop your post-smoking activities.

You will be amazed at the amount of time and freedom that you gain when you quit.

It may not be a new saying but is very true and very apt when you are quitting smoking – Do what you have always done and you will get what you have always got - Right now, you don’t want the same results as you have always gotten. Change your mind & Change what you do.

Key Steps

Change your mind – Change what you associate with smoking – Bring the distant future forward – Associate pain with continuing to smoke

The Reward - Associate massive amounts of pleasure with being a non smoker – Know clearly what you want to experience and achieve

Change what you do - Change your habitual actions – Change how you spend your time – Get physical - Re-gain control of your life

Swish Patterns - Take the time to learn how to effectively use the swish technique

Footnote

Vitality & A Zest For Life

People often ask me if they should use Gum, Patches or Prescription Drugs in order to help them.

My answer is always; Do whatever it takes! but always, regardless of which program you are going to use, always follow the two golden rules if you want to be successful.

It is no good having patches, gum etc... and doing what you have always done and think the same thoughts as you have always done.

Change your mind, change what you do with your body and you will experience freedom from cigarettes and you will gain a new feeling of vitality and zest for life.

I sincerely wish you every success!
