Discovering your rules

Discovering how your rules and beliefs shape your everyday life and your long term destiny.

Use a note pad or a ‘daily Page’ from your NLP daily journal

Run through a day in your life.

Start by writing in the time you get up, and then list what you do as your day begins.

Write down a whole day, all the way until you go to bed. Write the time, then what you do, make notes such as what you have for breakfast.

Write in as much detail as possible. Use today or yesterday as it should be easier for you to remember items in detail.

When your day is written down in detail it is time to discover what your rules are then question them.

Ultimately what you are trying to discover is WHY you do the things you do Why did you have what you did for breakfast?

What are your rules for eating healthy nutritious food?

For example a neighbour of mine always starts the day with bacon and eggs. She says (believes) it sets her up for the day. The truth is she works very hard and doesn’t get any time to eat until early evening, so she believes in filling herself up with heavy food (fuel?) before she starts her working day.

What you are looking at here are your daily life rules, these rules may seem small but they can still affect your destiny.

Lots of small changes to your rules will change ‘you’ on a personal level your life will change.

From your notes you can look deeper now at ‘why ‘you do ‘what’ you do on a larger scale.

You will be able to see what your ‘larger’ rules and beliefs are and you will be able to see what equals pain and what equals pleasure in your life.

A real life example. Some time back I was offered a job with a great salary, lots of travel, lots of perks and a nice top of the range car etc...

The issue I had with this was that one of my rules is that I must spend as much quality, fun time with my family as possible and that I must be there for them.

The questions that I asked myself when I was offered the job where;

Will this enhance my quality of life?

Will it enhance my family’s life?

Will it help us achieve our desired outcomes?

Would we be generally better off?

The answer to all of the questions was No.

There was one further question that I asked that may seem a bit peculiar, but for me it always helps me to stay on track with my goals and my vision of the life I really want to live.

This question is ;

Does this fit in with the man or the woman in your mind’s eye?

(Think back to the young lady in the previous page, the one who was forever going to live alone! When she completed the woman in the mind’s eye exercise it turns out that what she always dreamed of was being in a loving relationship, being married, having three children and living in Spain!)
