Where do your rules and beliefs come from? Do they belong to you?
Fact : whatever they are and wherever they come from, your rules and beliefs shape your life. they affect the tiny issues in your life and they affect your destiny.
Here is a true life example.
I recently had a conversation with a young lady. She told me that she would never marry; she went further and told me (even though she owned her own flat) that she didn’t ever want to live with anyone.
“What if you meet a great guy and fall deeply in love together?” I asked her
“I won’t” was her short sharp reply
Aged fourteen, after listening to her parents shout and fight for ten years they eventually divorced. Her mother soon entered into a relationship and moved her new boyfriend in to the family home. Three years later after much arguing and fighting the boyfriend moved out.
It’s very easy to see where some of this young lady’s beliefs came from.
Change your Beliefs - Change your Life!
We all have core beliefs and rules that we do not change, such as we don’t steal from others, we do not commit murder, but are there some rules that you could tweak or change completely that would simply enhance your life, are your rules holding you back?
Subtle changes can start to enhance the quality of your life, some changes may not seem to be fundamental at the time but the effects they can have on your life and destiny can be profound.
Can you imagine if when I was fifteen years old my rule for smoking cigarettes had been ‘never, never, never’. Instead of ‘well, I could just try one’.
A decision was made the day I tried my first cigarette, I decided to try one, just one, that couldn’t hurt surely? 25 years later I was smoking forty cigarettes a day. One tiny decision had a profound impact on my life.
(I used the principle of Pain and Pleasure, together with the Power Swish technique I quit smoking easily. It took 25 to build the habit and just a couple of days to break it)

A Belief is Born!
I can remember seeing my father go out to work early each morning (6.a.m.) In all kinds of weather to go and do his shift, working outside at a Concrete Works.
Years later when I worked in my first sales job I can remember feeling like a fraud because it didn’t seem like real work, not compared to what my father did.
I also believed that after a day’s work that a man sat down immediately to a large evening meal. There should be large portions overflowing the plate! And before going to bed there would be some kind of supper. Can you guess how, as a young man I developed this rule?
I changed my eating rules a long time ago. My evening meals became lighter and smaller in portion.
As I started to lose weight and become healthier the questions I constantly asked myself also changed.
It was no longer a case of what ‘can I eat?’ it was ‘what can I eat that is healthy and nutritious?’ or ‘what can I eat that will not bloat me and sap my energy?’
A major effect on your life and your destiny?
What you can do is question your rules and beliefs.
Ask yourself are there any seemingly small decisions you made a long time ago that seemed to be a small decision at the time, but has turned out to be a profound decision that has had a major effect on your life and your destiny?
Also ask yourself where your rules and beliefs come from? Are they cast in stone? Are they core beliefs? Can you change them? Better still ask yourself;
what rules and beliefs can I start to change right now to start making an incredible difference to my life?
Think of some of the rules and beliefs that you hold and how they affect your everyday life.
What are your rules for;
Taking exercise?
for eating and your diet?
For having fun?
Planning ahead? Designing an exciting Future?

Can other people rules help you? Yes they can. For example if you are planning on losing weight and becoming fitter and healthier it would help if you knew what rules healthy people such as athletes use. Study them, read about them, and learn as much as you can about them and their rules. See them as being your coach in this area. Discover what their rules are for diet, nutrition and exercise.
Making Changes
As you begin to change your rules and challenge your old beliefs remember to associate pain with not changing and pleasure to changing.
Use a daily page in your dynamic NLP daily journal, select four areas for improvement and then start to look at your current rules and beliefs for this area.
Then question the present rules and beliefs.
