Your State & Your Emotion
Emotion - the affective aspect of consciousness : feeling b: states of feeling c: a conscious mental reaction (as anger or fear) subjectively experienced as strong feeling usually directed toward a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body
What state are you in right now?
If you are sat reading this and you are enjoying a nice glass of wine then you are probably in quite a chilled out state.
After another glass of wine you may be in a tipsy state.
And after another glass of wine you could be in a drunken state!
In NLP we look closer at your states (emotion) We are looking at your full neurological process that includes your mind and your body
Think back and note down how many different states you have been in over the past few days.
Throughout the day we all go through many different states. You could feel loved, emotional, happy, excited, pleased and curious.
Some people may feel angry, sad, nervous or tired. Some states last a short while and others can last all day or even longer.
Have you ever had a ‘got out of the wrong side of the bed day where you were moody all day’? Or maybe you have just had a great day where everything seemed to go to plan?
Something has to happen for your states to change.
One minute you are up, the next you are down.
There are thousands of things that can happen during your day that can affect your states.(if you let them!) If your boss yells at you it puts you in a completely different state to when your lover cuddles up to you and says ‘I love you, is it nearly bedtime?'
Depending on what states you are in determines the results that you produce. Your states directly affect your behaviour. If you feel nervous or apprehensive then you are not going to be able to achieve that task your boss set you.
If you feel tired and negative you won’t hit your sales targets. But, if you feel strong, positive and confident you could achieve great things in both your personal and business life.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could choose your state? With NLP this is possible if you use your brain and your body the right way.
An important note: We fully understand that as human beings at some time we are going to feel the true states of sadness, a feeling of loss and upset. We appreciate that these states come to us all.
If you know what state you are in you can do something about it and change it if you want to.
Many people do not know what state they are in, they are drifting, they let what ever comes there way affect them without ever realising it doesn’t have to be like that.
We generally only use a few different states in a single day. If you take the time to become more aware of your states you can have a profound affect on your future.
Do you know a person that always seems to be cheerful? Or someone that always seems to be grumpy? Maybe you know someone that is always worried?
Most people have a state that feels most natural to them; they are quite comfortable with it. This is called the Baseline State.
If someone used one word to describe you what would that word be? Think of how you are, how do you behave most commonly, what is your Baseline State? What are you like? (Think of the Man or Woman in your mind’s eye – who are you? - What is their baseline state? What are they like?)
Take control of your state using the Dynamic NLP Daily Journal. Take control of your destiny. Know what you want, know what you need.
Creating States
There is always something happening around us that can throw in stimuli to put us into a state or to help us to desire a particular state.
Someone can say something to you ‘the wrong way’ an advertisement on the T.V. could show your favourite chocolate bar, your car could be stolen, your chocolate could be stolen! you could be saddened by a story on the news.
Most people experience states as something that is happening to them, but the truth is that you can decide what state to be in, you do have a choice about how to feel.
To put it simply; you run your brain, don’t let your brain run you.
Changing States
Have you decided what your baseline state is? You can change it if you want to, or if you are happy with it then keep it as it is, as long as your baseline state isn’t holding you back in anyway then there is no need to change it. But wouldn’t you rather be at peak state?
People use many different things to change their state, such as Alcohol, cigarettes, sex, drugs, shopping, watching a movie or listening to music. But the very best way to change your state is to change the way in which you think about things.
There are many ways to change your state
Try the swish
Try Reframing
A great way to change your state is by changing your physiology. Think of an occasion when something happened to you that was mildly upsetting, maybe someone said something or you didn’t do something quite correctly. Associate into the image (through your own eyes) see and feel what was going on around you. Now jump around the room while you picture the image, pull stupid faces, do a silly dance. It is impossible to feel the same feelings of upset when your physiology changes.
Someone that smokes cigarettes may be reaching into the packet to light another one up, but if they were to change their whole physiology they wouldn’t feel the same about wanting a cigarette.
There are three tools here you can use to change. There is the Swish Pattern, try it, practice it and you will be come very good at it, it can change your feelings, you state and your behaviours in an instant. Then there is reframing, realise what things mean to you, discover what beliefs you have accepted as true could be changed, and always try to change your physiology, if you are going to change something then do something different. Things don’t change – people change – change your body (what you do) and change your mind (what you think)
