Submodalities
Modalities and Submodalities
Your five basic senses are referred to as your representational systems of Modalities.
Visual Auditory Kinaesthetic Gustatory Olfactory
With each of the Modalities comes a finer distinction. These are called Sub modalities.
The principle sub modalities that people use to create their world are Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. (Sight, Sound and Touch)
Gustatory is taste, Olfactory is smell.

You can list your most powerful submodalities in the Dynamic NLP Daily Journal
Think of a pleasant memory, something that made you feel happy or was really enjoyable :-)
Notice the visual elements of the picture. Is it bright or dim? Is it a movie or still? Are you associated or disassociated? Is it big or small? Is it in colour?
Now think of the kinaesthetic elements. Do you have any feelings in your body as you view the picture? Can you feel temperature? Pressure? Touch? Where can you feel it?
And, the auditory elements. What can you hear? Specific words? Said in a particular tone of voice? Is it quiet? Loud?
Write down what sub modalities you noticed, was it bright or dim? What did you feel? Did your hear something? Run through the scene again and see how much you noticed.
Step Two
Think of something completely different, something far less enjoyable, maybe an occasion where you were uncomfortable with a situation.
You can even view something that you know you should do but cant find the motivation such as quitting smoking or losing weight.
Now view the two pictures at the same time on a split screen.
The pictures will have completely different sub modalities. The reason for this is because it is with your five senses that the world is represented to you through your brain.
Different representations going into your brain produce completely different results in your nervous system.
The idea is to use the sub modalities that you enjoyed from the first picture and use them in the second picture to help to motivate you.
Use all the pleasurable sub modalities to help you to achieve what you want.
For Fun
Go back to the first picture, play with the sumodalities. Make the image warmer, lighter, softer, larger, change as many sub modalities as you can.
Make a note which submodalities seem to trigger you more than others.
Write them down as these will be your key submodalities. (Key submodalities are very important when it comes to changing behaviours and habits using the Swish Technique)
You can add in other submodalities from your gustatory and olfactory senses. Such as sweet tastes, maybe bitter tastes, a particular favourite taste of yours. Add in the scent of a favourite perfume or aftershave.
Time Travel
Something that your mind can do is travel in time, not only can you think of a pleasant memory and enjoy the submodalities but you can think into the future and design a scenario that you wish to have and enjoy. Design something really pleasant and rewarding. Really crank up the sub modalities and see which you enjoy the most.
Add in voices, sounds, words said in a special way, your favourite colours and textures, temperature and movement. Enjoy!
